This week, we tackle one of the most ubiquitous tabletop series to come out of Kickstarter to date – Tiny Epic from Gamelyn Games and designer, Scott Almes. The series, which started in a 2013 Kickstarter campaign for Tiny Epic Kingdoms has spawned four games to date and a fifth is in the works, and they’ve only managed to get better over time.
Jason and Anthony sit down to look at not only how the Tiny Epic series has evolved, but how the games have been shaped and adjusted to fit the core mechanics and ideals of the genres they represent. We also dig into the solo mode that exists for each of the current four games (dummy player!) and discuss where they work, where they don’t, and what options we like best.
In addition to the basic run through of these games and discussion of what works and doesn’t, we spend a bit of time discussing what makes a great dummy player in a solo board game the portability factor in the Tiny Epic series, and whether the games faithfully capture the essence of the bigger games they are emulating and therefore if they are even needed in certain situations.
This is our biggest little episode yet, and we have a lot of fun discussing what is considered such a popular portable series of games.
