In our review, we’ll discuss the game, it’s unique features, the effectiveness of the race mechanic, and how deck building works when combined with a robust worker placement element. You already have three sessions lined up with friends – entire blocks of your weekend set aside to play variants of the game and get a real feel for it. There’s just one problem. Kicking the Habit: Ares Games blasts through the goalposts
Mere minutes after Ares Games (Wings of Glory, Aztlan, et. al.) launched their Kickstarter campaign ‘Galaxy Defenders – The Earth Strikes Back’, they had already met their funding goal of $40,000. The project was fully funded in less than five minutes, which means that they pulled in more than $8,000 per minute. Their amazing success shows no sign of stopping there, with the campaign having gathered nearly $200,000 in pledges ( almost five times their original goal) within 48 hours. They’ve had to start making new stretch goals to accommodate the surge of support. The campaign backs two expansions to…
Spinning-Off: Kicking the Habit segment to become its own series
One of the main segments of the BGA podcast has been the segment ‘Kicking the Habit’, where we discuss Kickstarter news relating to tabletop gaming. However, Kickstarter changes too quickly for us to provide good coverage under our current podcasting schedule. To try and get you better news faster, we have decided to spin-off ‘Kicking the Habit’ into its own series of articles, audio, and video content here on the site. The final format is still being worked out, but we are very excited to be giving special attention to the increasingly influential role of Kickstarter campaigns on tabletop gaming. The…
A Guide to Making Your Own Mashups
(Whipped up by Drew Davidson) The best things in life are mash-ups. Take food for example: Peanut Butter & Jelly; Chef Salad; Chocolate Milk; Cheese Omelets. Take two foods you like and slap ‘em together: Suppertime Mash-up! Of course, you just can’t take two ingredients randomly and combine them. You have to have a sense for what two foods would blend well in the same pot. It’s the same thing with board games. If you have a good understanding of games and know how to blend them, you could create some tasty mash-ups! And you know we’ve all done it…
2 Player Games with Staying Power
While I am woefully behind on the audit of my board game collection for Board Game Geek, if you were to ask me what I own more of than anything else, hands down it would be two player games. I own a lot of them, primarily because when I started playing board games, the only person I played with other than my weekly visit to an FLGS was my wife. So those were the games I’d buy. Sure I liked others, but no matter how much fun I had playing 7 Wonders, I wasn’t going to buy a copy for…
Episode 27 – Myth
This week, Anthony, Chris, and Daniel discuss one of the hottest kickstarter projects fulfilled in the last year – Myth – with an introductory dungeon crawl in the open-sandbox style game. We also talk about some of our favorite games from recent plays including Alhambra – a favorite in Anthony’s house – DC Deck Building Game, and In the Year of the Dragon – one of Stefan Feld’s first games. We also dig into Hearthstone for the first time – one of the hottest digital releases of the year and an interesting diversion when home alone without fellow gamers. On…
Board Gamers Anonymous joins the Dice Tower Network
When we launched Board Gamers Anonymous last summer, it was to have fun talking about tabletop games with friends. But in the back of our minds there were other goals – things we thought would be really, really cool if they ever happened. Joining the Dice Tower Network was one of those things. The Dice Tower itself is one of the most prolific podcasts around with more than 350 episodes and hundreds of reviews released annually, and Tom Vasel’s extended network gives a platform for nearly a dozen other podcasts, video series, and websites, all talking about this awesome hobby of ours.…
