Episode 112 – Board Game Bracket 2017 Round 1

Every year for the last three years we’ve taken 64 games and pitted them against each other to determine the to dog in a given category. This year is no different as we bring back our annual board Game Bracket – highlighting 64 of the top rated board games of 2016 in a tournament to determine the game that best represents its theme based on four groupings.

To kick things off, Anthony and Chris sit down to discuss their recent acquisition disorders, including brand new maps coming to Terraforming Mars and Rising Sun, the hottest game currently on Kickstarter. They then run through two of their recent plays.

Anthony digs into Gloomhaven, the hottest game of 2017 thus far and his earliest thoughts on the game. Chris shares his recent play of Oracle of Delphi. We dig into both games and discuss what we like about them, whether you should try to track copies down, and what our plans are for playing both in the near future.

Finally, there’s the big event.

This year’s Board Game Bracket features 64 of the best games of 2016, all of them categorized into our four regions: Fantasy, Sci Fi, Economic, and Historical/Societal. We dig into the first round of the tournament, whittling the list down from 64 to 32, with you, the listeners, helping us to thin things out when we need a tie breaker. Enjoy round 1, and make sure to check back in 2 weeks for the rest of the bracket as we announce the winner on March 26.

  • Anthony lives and plays games in Philadelphia, PA. A lover of complex strategy, two-player war games, and area control, Anthony is always eager to try a new game, even if he's on rule-reading duty.
