Table for One Episode 11: Arkham Horror: The Card Game and Solo LCGs

This week Anthony and Jason sit down to discuss the newest, and hottest, solo game on the market – Arkham Horror: The Card game. Designed by Nate French (of Lord of the Rings LCG fame) and Matthew Newman, the new living card game from Fantasy Flight Games offers a true solo experience for the first time, taking some familiar mechanics from Lord of the Rings and reworking them in the Cthulhu mythos, complete with a unique and interesting take on storytelling in a card game.

We’ll dig into this new one and offer our preliminary thoughts on the core set based on what amount of play we’re able to get in at this time. In addition, we dig into the game that came before it, Lord of the Rings Card Game, and look at how this now five year old modern classic has paved the way for scenario-based, story-driven solo and cooperative card games.

Finally, we ask the question that’s on everyone’s mind – is this game worth the cost? Does the living card game model of buying new cards every month and playing through each new story as it is released make sense for a solo gamer who may have other games on the shelf and is less likely to replay a given scenario multiple times through? With factors like deck building, time commitment, and overall cost, we’ll dig into the viability of this model for us as solo gamers.
